ADVANCED (8 Weeks)

   Reading & Writing

      Students can
·         read a variety of authentic texts and demonstrate the reading competencies by employing various reading strategies
·         understand in detail a wide range of lengthy, complex texts likely to be encountered in social, professional or academic life, identifying finer points of detail including attitudes and implied as well as stated opinions
·         react and respond to ideas & texts
·         use contextual, grammatical and lexical cues to infer attitude, mood and intentions and anticipate what will come next
·         apply appropriate research techniques
·         summarize long, demanding texts, research findings
·         employ summary, paraphrase and quotation techniques
·         evaluate the coherence of a text and draw the outline
·         apply critical thinking and problem solving skills
 
·         write clear, smoothly flowing complex paragraphs in an appropriate and effective style and a logical structure which helps the reader to find significant points
·         write a paragraph or three/five paragraph essays which develops an argument, giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view and explaining the advantages and disadvantages of various options (comparison and contrast, classification, problem and solution, argumentative)
·         synthesize and report information and arguments from a number of sources
·         interpret data from charts
·         practice paraphrasing
·         evaluate different ideas or solutions to a problem
·         revise and edit thoroughly
·         practice multiple choice questions (reading, listening and organizational skills)
 
Listening & Speaking
 
Students can
·         listen and respond to lectures, and demonstrate the listening competencies
·         draw the outline of lectures
·          take detailed notes
·         understand standard spoken language on both familiar and unfamiliar topics normally encountered in personal, social, academic or vocational life
·         follow most lectures, discussions and debates with relative ease
·         follow and understand most TV news and current affairs programs, and films
·         give clear, systematically developed descriptions on a wide range of subjects, with appropriate highlighting of significant points, and relevant supporting details
·         give a clear, systematically developed presentation, with highlighting of significant points, and relevant supporting detail
·         develop a clear argument with appropriate highlighting of significant points, and relevant supporting detail
·         use the language fluent and accurate enough on a wide range of general, academic or leisure topics, marking clearly the relationships between ideas
·         highlight the personal significance of events and experiences, account for and sustain views clearly by providing relevant explanations and arguments
·         deliver oral presentations by employing current technology
·         engage in group discussions and debates on variety of topics, and express their ideas and opinions with precision, and present and respond to complex lines of argument convincingly, and refute opposing ideas
 
Linguistic & Vocabulary Range
 
Students
·         can select an appropriate formulation from a broad range of language to express themselves clearly without much sign of having to restrict what they want to say
·         have good grammatical control
·         have a good command of lexical repertoire and good command of idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms
·         have a good range of vocabulary for matters connected to their field and most general topics
·         increase their active vocabulary to approximately 3500 words
·         can use effective sentence structures including forms of parallelism and subordination
·         demonstrate proficiency in the following grammatical areas:
